Trellis Plans

Have you ever seen a pumpkin growing happily off the ground when the gardener used garden trellis plans or pergola plans they happened found by reading an article?  Who would think that a heavy pumpkin could grow in mid air like a grape on the vine?  But, they do!

By using a trellis design with fence posts and some concrete reinforcement wire, you can do the same for your pumpkins.  Watermelons and other heavy fruits like it, too.  One nice thing is that they stay out of the dirt and the vines crawl up the trellis which keeps them out of the other plants in the garden.

When you buy some reinforcement wire, you will find that it is in a large spool which makes it easy to bend when you make your trellis. Just make it large enough to fit around the tomatoes and fold the wires under the other end and there you have a trellis to grow your tomatoes.  It has wide areas to put your hand in, you can pick tomatoes or pull off the suckers right through the holes in the wire.  You are going to feel so much more organized when you use your own trellis plans on each type of vegetable or fruit you are growing.

How to build a trellis? It’s not the most difficult thing to do. You buy different types of wire. Some has larger openings than others. Put the fence posts in the ground along with your wire pushed into the soil and you can right down the row, doing one after the other. When your vegetable grows, the sunlight will be able to get down through the vine so your plants will grow and flourish. The holes in the fence make for easy care and picking the peas, beans, tomatoes, whatever you have growing inside your vegetable trellis.

Having trellis designs with a beautiful garden in place will give you such peace of mind.  These plants become just like friends to you by the end of the growing season.  They are lush and green with beautiful fruits and vegetables on them that make eating so much more enjoyable because you know they were grown with love and good nutrition in the soil.

In this video you’ll see Oklahoma Gardening’s Kim Rebek discuss steps for planting grapes within a fruit garden by building a grape trellis and using trellis plans to make sure it can support the weight of the grape vine itself.

There are several things that will need to be done to prepare the planting site. There are 3 commonly used styles of trellis’s. The specific style depends on the type of grape that will be grown. Certain typse of grapes will have the tendency to grow in a downward pattern while others will do the exact opposite and grow upwards.

A few of the trellis types discussed in this video are the High Cordon System, which supports the vine on a single wire that is set 5 to 5 1/2 feet above the ground. Another system is the Geneva Double Curtain System, which is similar to the High Cordon, but here you will notice a second wire that is added for more support.

This style is used for a much more aggressive growth strategy. The third and final system is the Vertical Shoot Positioning, which is simply a low cordon wire that is only 3 feet off of the ground and the grape vine will grow in an upward manner. Of the three this is the one that will take the most personal attention and maintenance to grow.

Grape Garden Trellis Plans

If you will be growing these at home in your own backyard you’ll probably be using the High Cordon System.

Materials needed:

- 8 foot 4X4 ceder wooden posts – 2 1/2 feet will be placed under the ground leaving 5 1/2 feet above ground.
- Metal T-Posts – These will have the same placement measurements as the wooden posts.
- Galvanized steel wire #9
- Wire vises
- Hammer
- Drill with 1/2 inch drill bit and phillips head screw driver head
- Screws

The amount of each that you’ll need will simply depend on how big of an area you will be taking up for the grapes.

Some people will cement the posts into the ground for what they believe will give them a stronger support system for the growth of the grapes. You can also do a system with a trellis style ceiling with grapes hanging down creating a beautiful cool and shady place to hang out in.

Know matter what system you use for your trellis design be sure to use a good set of trellis plans to follow, weather it be through video of some other type of educational system.

If you are looking for a quiet reprieve from the outside world or you are looking for an attractive accent piece to your home, you might want to consider building a trellis either from scratch or from pre designed trellis plans. The choice will ultimately be yours. However, before you decide to build one from a pre-made plan or you are going to give designing your own trellis a try, you need to consider a few important things.

The first thing you need to know is whether you are up to designing a trellis on your own. If the answer to that is yes, then the next topic of conversation is how to build a trellis. You may have a design in mind, but if you aren’t good at executing that design using real building materials then you might want to reconsider designing one of your own and you might want to opt for a pre-made trellis or pergola plans .

Now, many people are concerned with their lack of building experience. If you think a drill gun looks as foreign to you as a phaser gun on Star Trek, then you might feel that building a trellis on your own is a bridge too far. The fact of the matter is that many less handy people have created and built some of the most fabulous trellis designs you can possibly imagine. However, with a lack of real building experience, you might want to go with a set of trellis building plans. It might limit your creativity a bit, but at least you’ll have a trellis rather than some unfinished monstrosity.

The truth is that pre designed trellis plans can be quite decorative. From detailed pergola plans to simple but elegant Tromp L’Oeil designs and much more, pre designed garden trellis plans can make for an extremely attractive and peaceful place around your home. If you are so inclined, then you should give designing your trellis a try. It may take you a bit longer and the building process might be a bit more tedious, but the finished product will be so worth it.

However, if you want to add appeal to your home, you are looking for a backdrop for a home hosted garden wedding or you just want a beautiful and attractive place on your homes property, already designed trellis plans might be your best and hassle free option.

You may not think that you are the sort of person who would have any use for trellis plans. After all, many people have difficulty keeping a house plant from wilting away let alone trying to grow food and flowers outdoors where they will be exposed to the weather. In reality, this is a worthwhile project for anyone who wants to have a better garden and it is much easier to be successful with it than you may think.

One of the secrets of gardening outdoors is that it’s often actually a lot easier than dealing with houseplants. While there are more variables out of your control, some of those variables actually help you. For example, most of the time an outdoor plant will be able to get by without additional water for much longer than an indoor plant would. Still, our domesticated plants do need some help in order to thrive and maximize their production and using a trellis design to set up a trellis is one of the best ways that you can help them.

A trellis is really just a structure that stands up off of the ground to give your plants something to support themselves against. This gives vine-type plants the ability to grow upward instead of just along the ground as they would without support. The great news is that plants aren’t very picky. Something as simple as a rectangle of boards with strands of clothesline strung across it will get the job done. Even people who have never had much success at building anything before are often pleasantly surprised by how simple this process is.

Building a garden trellis with garden trellis plans is well worth the time that it takes. Vines and fruits that grow along the ground have less access to sunlight and are more prone to rot and become moldy because they’re lying against the damp ground. By giving your plants the chance to stand up in the sunlight, you’ll be creating a more beautiful garden for yourself. You can also save a lot of money by producing more fruits and vegetables that you won’t have to buy at a store.

Finding some trellis plans and setting up a basic trellis are the first steps toward creating the garden you thought you could only dream of having.
